Lessons for New Managers: Preparing the Next Generation of Corporate Leaders
Abstract: The most recent declining economic climate has resulted in reductions in force, layoffs and early retirements. These actions have left management and leadership voids in many corporations. These personnel voids can create opportunities. Many good candidates have been pushed into leadership positions. Unfortunately these candidates often do not have the training, skills development and/or experiences that their predecessors have had in the past. This paper is intended to summarize a series of lessons learned from my management experiences during my twenty–seven year tenure at Xerox Corporation. My hope it may help these new leaders accelerate their learning and open new career opportunities to them. [presented at Society of Plastics Engineers' Annual Technical Conference 2011, Boston, Massachusetts (May, 2011)]
Lean Six Sigma and Innovation Can Synergistically Fit Within Product Development
Abstract: In a June, 2007 Business Week article the author outlined the issues 3M faced when integrating the disciplined Six Sigma methods and tools into their innovation-oriented culture. This paper suggests the Lean Six Sigma and innovation are linked as part of an evolutionary journey and that DMAIC and Design for Lean Six Sigma are key first steps for enabling effective, efficient and predictable delivery of innovative products first to the marketplace. [presented at Society of Plastics Engineers' Annual Technical Conference 2009, Chicago, Illinois (June, 2009)]

Unconventional Design for Lean Six Sigma (DfLSS) Program Design and Deployment
Abstract: Many Design for Lean Six Sigma (DfLSS) deployments are typically structured similar to companies’ deploy their Lean Six Sigma program. This paper outlines an unconventional Design for Lean Six Sigma deployment model used at Xerox Corporation to enhance the technology and product development organizations’ effectiveness, efficiency and predictability. This custom deployment model was structured around a building block training structure, a flexible competency-based certification process and an integrated coaching. DfLSS program deployment results include high employee satisfaction, over 1000 product delivery professionals trained and significant product delivery success stories.
